BA in International Hospitality Management

 

Copenhagen Hospitality College offers a BA in International Hospitality Management. The BA takes 1½ year and is offered as a top-up programme to graduates from the AP Programme in Service, Hospitality & Tourism Management or a similar programme.

The Bachelor programme is offered in both English and Danish.

Structure and Content

The BA in International Hospitality Management takes 1 ½ year and is year divided into 3 semesters (90 ECTS). The BA is oriented towards the hospitality industry and includes lectures with group assignments and projects, study trips, guest lectures, industrial placements, company visits and projects in collaboration with the hospitality industry.

1st Semester

Economics (15 ECTS)
The students are taught to:
• Make budgets for hospitality companies
• Calculate ratios and use these to manage hospitality companies
• Apply yield and revenue management for the purpose of optimizing the company's revenue generating potential

Management (15 ECTS)
The students are taught to:
• Manage hospitality companies and employees
• Enter into managerial and cooperative networks
• Apply managerial tools in the fields of human resource management, management, and development

2nd Semester

Culture and Guest Relations (international module) (15 ECTS)
The module contains the following themes:
• Culture
• The hospitality industry
• Communication
Industrial Placement (15 ECTS)

During the industrial placement students are given the opportunity to apply theory and methodology to real-life situations. The placement takes 3 months and must be completed in a relevant company where the students will take part in the daily management and operations. The placement can in terms of tasks, commitment and flexibility be compared to the duties that BA graduates will assume after graduation. During the placement the students develop their professional competences and gain insight into the complex issues that managers in the hospitality industry face. A central issue during the placement is that the students learn to assume responsibility and act in managerial functions.

3rd Semester

Strategy (15 ECTS)
The students are taught to:
• Understand the strategic challenges of the hospitality industry
• Assess companies' opportunities for development
• Develop new markets and concepts
• Develop companies strategically

Bachelor project (15 ECTS)
The bachelor project is the final activity on the BA where the students apply knowledge, theory, and methodology to a concrete, practical assignment. In the project the students work with a complex practical problem statement that relates to a hospitality company or the entire hospitality industry.

The project must be interdisciplinary and be completed in cooperation with a hospitality company.

The subjects on the BA, the industrial placement, and the bachelor project give the students an opportunity to form their professional profiles according to their individual career plans.

Admission and Requirements

Applicants must have completed the AP Programme in Service, Hospitality & Tourism Management, the AP Programme in Marketing Management or a similar programme to be eligible to apply for the BA.

The application deadline is July 5, 2011 for Danish applicants, while international applicants must apply before March 15, 2011.

Applicants apply to the Academy of Professional Higher Education - Copenhagen Business using Copenhagen Hospitality College's own application form. The application form can be downloaded here or be collected from the College.

The assessment of applications will include the following issues:

• Average grade from the AP Programme in Service. Hospitality & Tourism Management or a similar programme.
• Motivated application letter (max. 1 page).
• Relevant work experience.
• Other activities, e.g. military service, stays at folk high school, periods of residence abroad, etc.

Applicants are required to submit photocopies of relevant documents with their application, i.e. diplomas and transcripts, documentation for work experience, motivated application letter, etc.

Applicants must be prepared to participate in a selection interview. The purpose of the interview is to:

• Clarify the applicant's motivation for apply to the BA.
• Clarify the applicant's expectations to the BA.
• Provide the applicant with information about the BA.

Students on the BA who are eligible for a study grant (SU) from the Danish Education Support Agency can apply for a grant for the duration af the programme.

The BA starts in September 2011.

The BA is offered by the Academy og professional Higher Education - Copenhagen Business and is taught at Copenhagen Hospitality College, Vigerslev Allé 18, 2500 Valby.

Careers

The BA in International Hospitality Management is a good starting point for careers in Denmark and abroad as for example product manager, marketing manager, sales manager or project manager in the following sectors:

• Hotel
• Restaurant
• Tourism
• Service
• Experience economy
